Field
Trip On November 11, 2003, three teachers and an administrator from Nixon-Smiley CISD took a "field trip" to New Braunfels ISD. Shelley Janicek, Christina Elder, Joy McKinnis, and Chris Tassos visited New Braunfels classrooms and teachers. The purpose of the visit was to observe, communicate, and share ideas and methods with NBISD Special Education teachers. One particular interest was how the Technology Applications TEKS sere being integrated into Special Education instruction. The response from everyone that visited was positive and supportive. All of the teachers involved each possess several common characteristics: a willingness to take risks, a drive to see the potential of all students realized, and a belief in the power of educational technology. Shelley Janicek teaches 5th and 6th grade students Math, Reading, and Language Arts at the Middle School. At teh High School, Christina Elder and at the Elementary, Joy McKinnis both teach resource classes. Chris Tassos is the Special Programs Director for the district. Chris

On
Tuesday, November 11, 2003, several NBISD teachers welcomed three teachers
from Nixon-Smiley CISD into their classrooms. The purpose of the visit
was to learn about what our NBISD teachers are doing to integrate Technology
Application TEKS into Special Education Instruction. The day began at
Seele Elementary where Vicki Partin shared a creative alphabet book her
students had completed using the Digital Camera and word processing. The
next stop was New Braunfels High School with Judy Heyden. Judy demonstrated
the many unique ways she uses the Smart Board, the Kurzweil Reader, as
well as Inspiration software. Casey Hales at Memorial Intermediate presented
an eye-opening lesson using GPS and Palm Pilots with elementary students.
Their final stop was Carl Schurz where Cindy Reinarz exhibited the newly
adopted LeapTrack system, and Donna Waters addressed some incredible integration
ideas using applications familiar to both districts. Each teacher went
out of their way to be a "host" or "hostess" to the
visitors, providing exceptional lesson ideas and productive handouts.
The Nixon-Smiley teachers were able to see first hand the awesome job
NBISD teachers are doing on a daily basis. As they departed all of the
teachers expressed their excitement about returning to Nixon-Smiley and
having the opportunity to implement the numerous new and innovative ideas
in their classrooms. Paula
